SCANPST.exe Finding the hidden file or fixing the file. Outlook 2000, 2003, 2007 using Windows Vista

This webpage was created after several personal experiences of Outlook crashing and/or locking up. It was created as a personal reference ONLY and should not be construed as advice in any way.

Cause of the problem.

If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2000, 2003, or 2007 and your file size goes over 2gb (gigabytes), the program goes haywire.  The PST file, also known as personal storage table is the main file that is associated with all of your e-mail data.

I don't know about you, but I like to keep all e-mail correspondence for reference if I ever need it.

Vista & Outlook 2007
If you have found this webpage, you have probably been locked out of Outlook 2007, you are using Vista, and you've been trying to find the SCANPST.exe on your computer.
This file is actually hidden on your machine.  The file is actually hidden in this folder
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12

To actually find this program, go to the start menu on the bottom left of your screen, and select "search."

Next, type in the file you are searching for, which is SCANPST.exe
After you have typed this in the search box, select "search everywhere," which is above the search box.
If it does not find the SCANPST.exe file, then you will have the option to do an "advanced search," which is below the searched results.  Go ahead and click "advanced search."

Above in the "advanced search" options, you will want to type in the same query " SCANPST.exe."

IMPORTANT TIP: You will also want to check the box to the bottom left "include no-indexed, hidden, and system files."
SCANPST.exe should appear now that you have selected to search all files including hidden files.

Click on the SCANPST.exe and repair your PST file.  It is usually Outlook.pst file.

Once you have Outlook 2007 fixed, be sure to delete as much stuff as you can to reduce your PST file under 2 gigabytes.

If you experiencing this error message "This application has failed to start because SCNPST32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem," you probably have downloaded SCANPST.exe from the Internet or another computer, which is not working correctly.  You will need to either use the correct SCANPST.exe that is located on your computer or download a good copy.
